Boilers don’t last forever. Most have a working life of around 10 to 15 years, and an old, inefficient unit can quietly cost you a fortune. Here are the signs that repair is no longer the smart option.
1. It’s over 12 years old
Age alone isn’t a reason to replace, but older boilers are far less efficient than modern A-rated models. If yours is over 12 years old and starting to play up, a new boiler could noticeably cut your heating bills.
2. Rising energy bills
If your bills are creeping up without any change in how much heating you use, your boiler may be losing efficiency. Modern condensing boilers can be up to 90%+ efficient, compared with 60-70% for many older units.
3. Frequent breakdowns
The occasional repair is normal, but if you’re calling an engineer several times a season, the costs add up fast. At some point, repeated repairs cost more than a reliable replacement.
4. A yellow flame instead of blue
The flame in your boiler should be crisp and blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and a possible carbon monoxide risk. This is a safety issue, so switch the appliance off and call a Gas Safe engineer immediately.
5. It’s getting harder to find parts
As boilers age, replacement parts become scarce and more expensive. If your engineer is struggling to source components, that’s a strong sign your boiler is reaching the end of its life.
